HOW DO WE EVALUATE A PUPPY'S TEMPERAMENT?

From 6 weeks on

With puppies, some temperament traits are stable, and some are adjustable. We test all 12 listed below during their evaluations.

While there are many additional traits we can look at, these ones are crucial in determining our placements for service, facility, and family pets!
We start taking notes of temperament traits when puppies are 6 weeks, and perform their evaluation between 50-52 days (7+weeks).
Families can only pick their furever companion after the evaluations have been completed, on go-home day at 8 weeks

STABLE TRAITS

  • Assertiveness (human and dog)

  • Motivation

  • Energy level

  • Prey drive (intensity)

  • Human focus

  • Tenderhearted

ADJUSTABLE TRAITS

  • Confidence

  • Nerve strength / Resiliency

  • Touch tolerance (compliance only - not if they like it)

  • Sound sensitivity

  • Sight sensitivity

We evaluate each of the 12 traits mentioned above, for each puppy.
In order to get the best results possible, we set up an area in our house where our puppies have never been before. We record each evaluation, and send them to our puppy 'pawrents' so they can better understand our process and the results.
Our evaluations are VERY helpful in picking the best puppy for your family, depending on your (and the puppy's) needs!
