F1 Bernedoodle

This sweet Izzie is one of our puppies we produced.

She is an F1 Bernedoodle, which is a cross between a Poodle and a Bernese Mountain dog (50/50).

Will they have the famous "Teddy Bear look" we love?

YES, they will all have the "teddy bear look", as long as the Poodle carries 2 furnishing genes and will transfer at least 1 to his offsprings. We absolutely need to GENETICALLY TEST our parents in order to know what they carry!

What are furnishings and why are they SO important when breeding Doodles?

Furnishings are what's going to determine if the dog will shed lots, minimal, or not at all. The more furnishings, the less shedding!

Bernese Mountain dogs carry 2 unfurnished genes (called IC/IC = incomplete). That is why they have short hair on their nose, paws, and shed lots. Their coat doesn't grow like the Poodle's, (or human hair), instead, they shed it out.

Poodles on the other hand have 2 copies of furnishing genes (called F/F = fully furnished). Which is why they don't really shed, have curly fur all around their body that grows continuously.

When producing an F1 Bernedoodle, the Bernese will give 1 copy of incomplete furnishings (IC) to their offsprings and the Poodle will give them all 1 copy of furnishing (F) as well --> Puppies will all genetically be F/IC (furnished, with a varying degree of furnishings... some will be slightly more than others, and some will have weaker furnishings), but all will have long, wavy fur.

Are they considered hypoallergenic?

No, they are not. They can still shed a bit, although not even near as much as a purebred Bernese (cuts it down at least 50%+).

What kind of coat will they have?

F1 Bernedoodles usually have a very pretty wavy coat (with varying degree of curls/waves). It is usually fairly easy to maintain with regular brushing.
Berneses don't carry curl genes, and Poodles have 2. So they will all inherit 1 copy of straight hair, and 1 copy of curly hair (-/+), which will give them a wavy coat, and not super curly!

Will they need to be groomed?

They will still need to be groomed regularly, as their fur will keep on growing just like a Poodle. We recommend going to the groomer every 8-10 weeks, and brushing regularly in between appointments. They are unfortunately not suitable for families with severe allergies since they are not considered hypoallergenic dogs!
